GLITTER FOR DAYS helped make (read: stirred things)  midnight meals with my boyfriend for his fraternity double checked if snow is cold (it is) made cake pops for my sororitys philanthropy event tried to share the little things that make me laugh helped plan our sorority retreat stuffed my face at boston restaurant week two nights in a row helped plan our senior toast as part of class council to celebrate less than 100 days left at MIT! a few days ago i remembered helping my (sorority) little (sister) on a project she needed to finish desperately. i made the (then seemingly impossibly difficult) choice to sit my butt down on her linoleum floor for a few hours to help her out, mumbling that it would be worth it compared to the other work i had on my plate. today, i dont even remember what else i had to do. im hoping the rest of my (and your) senior year pans out like that. Senioritis Im not going to lie; being a senior pretty much rocks. Im only taking three classes this term, and the grade in all of them is based almost entirely on tests so basically I have three tests, a pset, and possibly a paper between me and graduation. Not to mention that my grad school only cares that I actually graduate, and is completely uninterested in the actual grades I get this term. (I wish I could be all badass and be like Im getting straight Ds, baby! because wouldnt it be cool to not care at all for one time in my life? In reality, I may very well get my first 5.0 at MIT, because Im not as good at slacking off as I try to pretend I am. I give up.) Since I dont have that much schoolwork, Ive had crazy amounts of free time recently. Not that Ive really done anything earth-shattering with them. Some things I have done recently Go shopping. Adam and I went to the Cambridgeside Galleria on Friday. I wanted to buy towels and bedsheets for our new apartment. Adam wanted to buy Brain Age for his Nintendo DS. He won; we bought the game, but didnt find any suitable (read: cheap) towels. I have nonetheless been kicking his ass in the game, so maybe he didnt win in the end. Get furniture. MIT dorm rooms come furnished with beds, mattresses, desks, and shelving, so Ive never had to own furniture before. But Adam and I are moving to Westgate at the end of the month, and suddenly we have to buy things like a bed and a mattress and a microwave. Furniture is expensive! Get fit. Cheerleading practice is over for the year (and, I mean, forever for me), so I figure I have to start some sort of exercise routine and stick with it before it becomes summer and I laze out on the couch and eat potato chips in the air conditioning. All you warm-climate kids are probably like oh my lord, Boston is freezing and to that I say, as a public service announcement: not in the summer its not. And every year I wait until like June 1 to start my exercise program, and I quit around June 15 because its too hotttttt and Im too lazyyyyyy. But since I am no longer going to be a college athlete, I think Id better start exercising now or Ill gain the First Year of Graduate School Fifteen. (I gained the Freshman Negative Five when I came to MIT. Join a club sport! Its good for you!) Watch absurd amounts of TV. Jomar 06 bought the first season of Lost recently, and basically our entire entry watched the whole season on Saturday and Sunday. And then Adam and I downloaded all of season 2 from iTunes. And before that, we read most of the episode recaps from Television Without Pity. Im officially addicted, but on the upside, so is everybody with whom I live. Not do so hot in lab. I went in today to image some neurons I prepared last week on the labs worth-more-than-my-life confocal microscope, and they looked like crap. I cannot even tell you how mad that makes me, especially since I would really like to get my project finished up before I graduate and leave the lab. So I came home and made meatcubes and garlic bread and spaghetti, because even if my neurons suck, my cooking is awesome. Some public service announcements These are just some things Ive heard people asking here and there. If you have any other questions, as always, please feel free to ask. Does it cost extra to stay in the dorms over IAP? Do the dorms close for winter and spring breaks? No, IAP tuition and housing is included in your payment for the entire year. It doesnt cost anything extra to stay on campus for the month of January, except for what you consume in food, I guess. The dorms dont close for winter or spring breaks; if you so desired, you could stay in the dorm from the end of August to the end of May and never move a muscle. It does cost extra money to stay in the dorms over the summer. Where does one buy MIT textboooks? The Coop definitely sells textbooks, but they mostly sell said textbooks at a much higher price than other vendors. However, sneaky persons that they are, they dont release the names/ISBNs of books needed for class anywhere but at the Coop itself. (Smart, eh?) What I usually do is go to the Coop, write down the ISBNs of the books I need for classes, then use a book search engine like this one to see how the prices online + shipping compare to the Coops prices. If I know someone whos taken one of my classes, Ill go see if they want to sell the book too. (There used to be a website where MIT students bought and sold their used textbooks, but it closed down and like five sites replaced it. No one site has emerged as the clear leader in the MIT used book business.) Usually I end up ordering most of my books online and buying the ones with a negligible price difference from the Coop. Particularly for freshman classes, its useful to ask the sophomores/juniors around you if they still have their GIR books most are happy to be rid of them for a few bucks. Should I do an FPOP? Yes. FPOPs are fun, and theyre a great way to meet some of your new classmates. Whats the deal with the meal plan? You or someone with money puts money into your TechCash account, which is linked from your MIT ID card. When you want to buy some food somewhere on or around campus, you get your card swiped and the amount is subtracted from your balance. You want food, you pay money. Its kind of like real life. ;) You can add money at any time, so dont worry too much about estimating the exact amount youll need per semester if you pay too much fall semester, it will just stay in your account for use later. When can I get my MIT email address? Okay, I know you all want to get MIT Facebook accounts. Deep breaths. As Matt said recently: Youll receive everything you need for an email address in the Next Big Mailing, set to go out in a couple weeks. In the meantime, you might start thinking about what youd like your user ID to be (you get to pick) keeping in mind that this email address will be seen by all your friends, professors, and future employers/grad school admissions committees. Many people at MIT get their nicknames from their usernames. Choose wisely! Other questions 1. Chaine asked, How do you schedule your UROP hours? Ive noticed in the course catalog that some departments (like 10 and 22) offer a joint BS and MS. Your thoughts? Like how feasible? When I finalize my class schedule for the term, I look at the open spots and fit in as many hours as I want to for my UROP, then give the schedule to my postdoc, who sticks it up behind his computer. Not too terribly complicated. :) I try to schedule my classes in the morning so I have most of the afternoon free to work in the lab for example, my schedule for last term is here and the one from last spring is here. A lot of people at MIT do five-year bachelors/masters programs, although most of them do it in course 6. To my knowledge, its not a great deal harder, but it does involve being sure you want a masters degree in your subject pretty much by the end of sophomore year, which is not something about which everybody is sure. But if youre sure you want that masters degree, I think a five-year program is a super thing to do. 2. Anonymous commented, As my EC told me, International students are a level up from domestic students( I am considered domestic myslef but I attended high school abroad :D) how do you feel that?? did you realize it?? In my experience, there arent really groups of MIT students who are more special or less special than others. We all take the same classes, and we all do the same work. Once you get to MIT, it doesnt really matter what your background is, and people dont even notice after a few weeks who went to public school, or private school, or school abroad, or who got a perfect score on the SAT. International students help domestic students on problem sets, and vice versa because theyre not international or domestic anymore, theyre just MIT students. 3. Dimitri (10) :) asked, I have some small questions and you seem to be the most appropriate person to ask. My first dorm choice would be McGregor and I too love to be organized. I would love to have a file cabinet in my dorm. Is that allowed? Will I be able to find one in campus? (possibly for free?) I would hate living in a dirty room. Will we have cleaning supplies at our disposition? Are the floors made from carpet? Does that carpet gets dirty/dusty fast? You are more than welcome to have a filing cabinet in your room. Its possible that you could find one for free you can add yourself to an email list called reuse, which will inform you when theres stuff around campus for the taking. People get computer parts and other kinds of equipment on reuse all the time. In MacGregor, we have access to an entry vacuum cleaner; Im not positive that other dorms have things like that, but they probably do. Our floors are covered in carpet, and I like to vacuum mine at least once a week it doesnt get terribly dirty, but it does get crumbs and dust and hair all over it. I actually own my own little Dustbuster, which I bought on sale at Target, and which is just the right size for a dorm room. 4. XYZ asked, International students go back to their home country in summer. Still you feel that they will be able to manage loan component of their self help? Please guide me. Its certainly possible to make enough money if you stay at MIT for the summer (perhaps doing a UROP); many students dont spend a great deal of time at home once theyre in college. I think it will be a little more clear how youd like to spend your summer after youve been in school for a little while. 5. Fei asked (about MacGregor) Hey Mollie, how many people share a room, or all of them are single rooms? Yup, all the rooms in the dorm are singles.

Making the Choice

If you are reading this post, a pretty huge congratulations is due because you did it! You got into college, and that alone is an immensely significant feat to be proud of. Now, chances are, you are faced by a whole new kind of problem: making the choice. Every single school, no matter how similar at face value it may seem, is distinguishable by some kind of unique attribute. Different location. Different size. Different AP credit transferring†¦ Nevertheless, it’s time to be narrowing in on â€Å"the one,† so how do you start? 1. Try to Visit The more potential schools that you can see in person, the better – particularly the ones that you have yet to visit before. There truly is nothing that can replace the gut reaction that you get when walking on campus. You can assess the dorms, the cafeterias, and the current students all in person. There’s a stark distinction in experience between seeing a school to decide if you’ll apply and seeing a school to decide if you could actually spend the next four years of your life there (yikes!). After sending out acceptances, most colleges will have some form of â€Å"On Campus Days,† where they host all of the prospective newcomers at one time for a pre-orientation hoorah. If it’s feasible, these sessions are certainly worth considering; aside from being high energy, they’re usually very informational too. However, if making a trip to tour just doesn’t work out schedule or budget-wise, don’t stress! There are plenty of other way s to get a more accurate read on a college, which takes us to our next point. 2. Join the School’s Facebook Group If you are currently thinking to yourself, â€Å"But Elise [because we are on a first name basis], I don’t have a Facebook!† Get one. No, seriously my friend – it’s time. Social media is truly invaluable to college acceptance season because just about every school will make a closed group strictly for that year’s admitted students, for example: Pamona College Class of 2019. All you have to do is request to join, and the group’s admins (who are typically admissions officers or people of like authority) will let you in. Not only are these Facebook groups amazing places to get your myriad of questions directly answered, they also can give you some sense for what kinds of classmates you’d have. Granted, the entire student body should not be based upon a couple hundred active participants, but it provides a decent sample size. It’s also not uncommon for current upperclassman to be in the group, giving unbiased responses about social life, particular educational programs, clubs, athletics, and so on. You get to find those who have similar majors, enjoy similar hobbies, or are from similar places in the country and chat them up. Or, if you are looking at what people are posting and thinking, then that’s something to take note of too. 3. T-Chart It Is this ridiculously old school? Yes. Is it effective? Well, I definitely think so. Take the schools that you are torn between and set up a T-chart (Excel spreadsheets work particularly well). Start setting up a direct comparison of one to the other: is the campus urban or rural? Is it a sports or liberal arts school? How much is tuition? How much financial aid were you given? How many students attend? What are class sizes? What is your declared major? Do they accommodate study abroad? There are endless things that you can have as qualifiers for each school, so feel free to stick to the ones more important to you. By aligning all of the facts, you can ensure that you are making the most educated decision that you can; it keeps everything straight and just that must easier during this relatively high-stress (but high-excitement!) time of senior year. It’s not news that there’s a lot that goes into confidently committing to a college. One way or another, you will find yourself having to compromise, but remember that even having options to choose from is an absolute privilege. No matter what happens, there is a very good chance that, if you keep an open mind, you’ll wind up thriving.

Because healthcare varies between cultures, nurses have historically taken on many different roles: a folk healer, a healer with religious ties, and that of a servant (Ellis Hartley, 2012). Because of these various roles, some may not realize, or accept, that nursing has evolved into a much needed profession. This essay will discuss what a profession is, the criteria needed to be present in order to be considered a profession, and the reasons why nursing should be considered a profession. Criteria of a Profession In order to understand why I consider nursing a profession, you must first understand the meaning of the word. For example, it has been shown that adequate staffing of nurses affects the outcome of patient’s hospitalizations. Dr. Jack Needleman and colleagues found that â€Å"insufficient nurse staffing was related to higher patient mortality rates† (as cited in American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), 2011). This statistic, along with similar findings in several other research studies, proves that nurses do indeed provide an essential service to society. Has a Theoretical Body of Knowledge. The learning of theories and how to apply those theories to practice is the basis of this criterion. This involves being able to identify the problem and which solutions, based on learned theories, may work for that problem (Clarke Winch, 2004). The processes used in this problem identification differ for each occupation. Nurses, who gain their knowledge of theories during their formal schooling, have a process that is unique to the nursing field. It is called the nursing process. This process is â€Å"an interactive, problem-solving process and a systemic and individualized way to achieve the outcomes of nursing care† (Stuart, p. 151, 2009). Through this work, Hawthorne is able to depict the apparent hypocrisy in today’s world and especially in religion in America. It is the process of acquiring the software services and managing the purchase and sell of the software projects and the software services. The procurement process in IBM is used as a bid process to acquire the software services from the outside or to provide the software products to the other organization or the customers (Rita and Krapfel 2015). It acts to acquire and to purchase the software services from an organization. Procure is the term to handle the marginal benefits, price fluctuation and the delivery status and the placed orders as well. E-procurement: E-procurement process of IBM is the process of business to consumer, business to government and business to the business sale and the purchase of the goods and the software projects and the software services through the internet. The value chain of the e-procurement is made up of the electronic information, electronic tendering, electronic auctioning and various electronic activities which are done using the internet (Fernandes and Vieira 2015). The management of the indent includes the workflow involved in the preparations of the software projects tenders. Indent management part of the workflow is optional that is helpful to provide the best indent process for the procurement. E-procurement Capabilities of IBM: The catalog of the products is tailored with much currency and many language supports. There is an option available for the online product customization so that the customer can avail those IBM products which customer needs. There is an option for automated order entry so that the customer can place the order with less number of errors (Phillips 2013). E-procurement supports some platforms in IBM: SAP Oracle Ariba E-Marketplaces Sustainable Procurement: Sustainable procurement is a process of investment and purchasing. Sustainable procurement is a process that is being used in IBM to control the social and environmental impacts of the investment and purchasing process. This process is used by IBM to fulfill the requirements of services and the work utilities (Morozov et al. 2016). This process is used to meet the required resources to the organizations such as software tools and the services. Sustainable procurement is used to gain the profits in IBM by fulfilling the requirement of all the resources and it is also used for generating the value for money in any organization to make the profit. Sustainable procurement can be used by all the organizations to make sure that the purchasing goals of the company are linked to the climate change and the resource efficiency. Importance of the procurementfor global organizations operating in complex environments: The procurement is very important for the success of the global organization. Procurement is important for purchasing the software and for developing the error free software. Procurement is helping the global organizations in such ways that the old manager never imagined. According to the report of The Boston Consulting Group, the importance of the procurement functions is describing. By using the procurement process, any software company such as IBM can implement the strategy to reduce the risk such as the project execution error. Procurement is important for the rapid growth of the companies (Yan et al. 2016). The procurement process is very important for IBM Company Such As IBM increased its growth rapidly and formed a remarkable transformation over last fourteen years. The procurement team of IBM is stationed in various countries. By using the centralized and decentralized process, IBM transformed its procurement. Procurement enables the companies to outsource and offshore their manufacturing operations. The total turnover can be improved by using the functions of procurement. It is helpful to regulate and improve the production of the company and the services provided by the company. The procurement process is very efficient for making the right decision for the cost of the goods. It affects the overall cost carrying out the decision. The total cost of the software projects and the software service decides by using the procurement by many departments of the company. The procurement process is related to the strategic functions or the strategic working to increase the profit of the company. The prices of the tools used for developing the software can be reduced by using the procurement functions and the total cost of developing a project can be reduced. Procurement process enables the company to find out the best resources to develop the software project or any other projects. The procurement process is necessary to reduce the risk of the failure of any project at the time of execution. The output can be maximized by using the procurement functions regarding research within the available funds. By investing the same capital, the resulted output can be improved of the software solution. In the public sector, the funds for investing comes from the public in the form of student fees paid for purchasing any software and from the grants and from the taxes paid by the public. Procurement is necessary for ensuring that the possible value for the money is obtained at the time of commitment of the expenditure. Procurement functions are used to analyze the result of the project that the resulted out is same with the targeted out or it is not same. The procurement process is used in the global organization to reduce the risk of the failure of the project and to meet the user's requirement. Procurement supports the operational requirements of the companies such as to understand the requirements of the business and the strategy to purchase the software services or goods from the right source and to sell the goods to the specific users. Identifying the opportunity and the objectives of the company is necessary. Contribution of the procurement to IBM: The contribution of the procurement functions is very wide in the global organizations. The role of the procurement in IBM is to sustain the software service and the software projects to meet the internal requirements of the organization. The functions of the procurement are helping the organizations to understand and implement the strategy for purchasing the goods and the software services. The procurement process is important to manage the supply chain process of a company such as to identify the opportunities, achieve the objectives and to manage the internal and external operations. Procurement gives the value to the managers of the company to evaluate and select the supplier to supply the software projects and the software services. The procurement process the purchasing of the tools which is required for developing the software projects. The review of the software specifications is done under the procurement functions. The sourcing teams increased by the procurement function an d the total turnover can also be increased by using the procurement functions (Ferri et al. 2014). Procurement function allows the organizations to take advantages of the discounts and the warranties given to the customers. The procurement allows IBM to negotiate with the local vendors to take the advantages of the discount on the software solutions and services. In 1990s early, IBM was the decentralized organization and the end user' review was very negative for IBM. There was the lack of the sourcing expertise. The process of IBM was very inconsistent and the paper intensive. The technology used in IM was very not high technologies and there was a lack of the basic information. A procurement function contributes the organization in many ways such as to manage all the process well. Now, IBM is one of the top- most IT company. Procurement functions are very helpful for IBM to establish a reputation among the competitive market and to be established in the global market. In 1990s IBM was not highly valued by the top business but in today era, IBM is the well-established company. Procurement management functions enable IBM to handle all the activities very well. Literature review for the project risk for IBM: A literature review is designed for the examining the potential to develop the useful and the error free project. When the software developer is developing a project and the developer is not able to achieve the targeted output then there is the high probability of the risk occurrence. There may be some uncertain or unexpected variation that affects the quality of the project. The project risk management in IT includes tow processes that are risk evaluation before developing the project and managing the risk at the time of the development. The focus of this report is to manage the risk at the development time of the project (Kern et al. 2012). In a study of 56 decision support system, there are four implementation strategies suggested by Alter to manage the project risk. Those four strategies are following as division of the project activities to the responsible and qualified person, to keep the simple solution and the solution should base on satisfactory output and the last is that the developed project should meet the user's requirement. Literature review of the Procurement Management for IBM: Procurement management is the way to manage all the purchasing and selling process of IBM. The literature review of the procurement management for IBM is divided into three parts. In the first section, the dimension of IBM responsibility is introduced. This section shows the various environmental management system and methods. The second section is used to define the supply chain management process of IBM that concentrated on various procurement functions (Yang et al. 2015). The third section of the literature review is the mixed strategy of the first and second part. The third part of the literature is used to transfer the environmental issues into the various phases of procurement accounts. Supply Risk: Supply risk is a process to define the chances of incidents and the chances of the project failure. Supply risk is used to define the risk associated with the inbound supply. Supply risk is the term used in any IT company to identify the risk which can occur at the time of project development. Supply risk can be managed by using the supply chain management (Hoffmann et al. 2013). Conclusion: Project procurement in IBM is independent activity that is carried out at the time of project execution. It is a systematic process to identify and procure the activities done at the development time of a project. Project procurement is the function for the project manager and project procurement is very necessary for IBM or all the organizations to manage the activities and to earn the profit. Project procurement functions help IBM to be established in the global markets (Costantino et al. 2015). The procurement and the supply chain management are the processes used in the various organizations to manage all the activities done in an organization. In short, it can be said that the procurement and the supply chain management is the way to handle the project risk to make the project successful and to increase the value of the company in the global market.
